Introducing Zain Velji
Zain Velji brings more than 10 years of experience in advocacy, political, and non-profit communications, marketing, and engagement. As a Partner at Northweather, he has helped shape the strategies of numerous campaigns and organizations. Zain is a frequent public speaker and political commentator, regularly appearing on CBC radio and television, and has featured in federal election night coverage for CTV News.
In addition to his professional achievements, Zain serves as Board Chair at The YMCA Calgary and is actively involved with the Canadian Children’s Book Centre and The Samara Centre for Democracy. He’s done all sorts of work, like giving advice to both of the companies and nonprofits, and he’s had important jobs in big political campaigns. He was the campaign manager for Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi in 2017 and led advertising efforts for the Alberta NDP in 2023. Recently, he served as Naheed Nenshi’s campaign director for the historic 2024 Alberta NDP Leadership campaign.
Zain also hosts the acclaimed podcast, The Strategists, where he delves into political strategy and public affairs. Recognized for his contributions, Zain was named among Calgary’s Top 40 under 40 by Avenue Magazine, received the Horizon Alumni Award from the University of Alberta, and was honored with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal for his dedicated community service. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Alberta.
